The Children of Húrin – UK First Edition Triple-Signed, 2007
First UK edition signed by Christopher Tolkien, Alan Lee and Bernard Hill, with direct Waterstones release-event provenance.
London: HarperCollins, 17 April 2007. UK first edition, first impression.
Christopher Tolkien signed the special bookplate bearing Alan Lee’s Helm of Hador motif, mounted at the front of the volume. Alan Lee and actor Bernard Hill, who portrayed King Théoden, signed the title page.
The copy is accompanied by a Waterstones thank-you note dated 18 April 2007, the day after the release event. Bernard Hill attended that event alongside Alan Lee, giving the third signature particularly strong provenance.
This copy is unread and in mint, As New condition. The volume includes the fold-out red-and-black Map of Beleriand drawn by Christopher Tolkien, eight colour paintings and twenty-five pencil sketches by Alan Lee, and Christopher Tolkien’s introduction and appendix on the history and writing of the tale.
HarperCollins created Christopher Tolkien’s signed bookplate for selected launch and promotional copies. Contemporary information indicates that approximately 900 were signed, with only about 200 allocated to the UK Waterstones release event.
An exceptional triple-signed first impression with direct Waterstones release-event provenance.
