Up for sale is a very special and rare copy of The Hobbit, signed by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien himself. This is the British edition, Third edition, seventh impression, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1972. Measuring approximately 5-1/4 by 7-3/4, this charming edition of the book features the author's line illustrations, with four of them in colour.
Signed copies of The Hobbit are exceptionally rare, regardless of the edition, and this one is especially unique as it bears the previous owner's signature and inscription, which reads "To James & Mary with great affection, Fred." This adds an extra layer of history and charm to an already highly collectible book.
Although there is a small correction in red ink in the listing of illustrations, correcting the misspelled "ratelves" to "raftelves," this charming edition is in very good condition overall. There is a slight rub at the upper tips and a small moisture stain, measuring about 1/2" by 1/4" at the signature and a half of the page edges. However, this does not detract from the beauty and rarity of this signed copy.
